The absurd dutch horror film By kuthoer with Katja Herbers will soon be seen in Great Britain and Ireland. The film was purchased by distributor Vertigo Releasing and will be released in UK and Irish cinemas from mid-March.
The international title of the film will be according to director Ivo van Aart The chronicler. As far as he knows, no text or dialogue is censored, he tells NU.nl.
The film did remarkably well overseas in 2020. The dark comedy was also purchased in the United States, Canada, Spain and Australia. The film had previously been released in South Korea.
By kuthoer was the most striking title in NPO’s phone film series last year and is about a columnist (Herbers) taking revenge on the trolls scolding her online. Director Van Aart and screenwriter Daan Windhorst got the idea for the film when they read about the impact of profanity on social media.
“The international success shows that the current subject of social media trolling is a universal problem,” said producer Sabine Brian of producer NL Film.
By kuthoer has also been performed at festivals in Germany, Canada, Romania, Norway, and the United States, among others. The Dutch film won the Audience Award at the Montreal Fantasia Festival. In the Netherlands, the film can be viewed via NPO Start.
