The U.S. government has restrictions on road fuel traffic on Sunday evening Partially canceledThe country’s largest oil pipeline has been shut down since it was hacked on Friday. Truck drivers in eighteen states no longer have to adhere to the maximum driving time in a working day because, according to Washington, there is an emergency.
On Friday, the headquarters of the colonial pipeline from Texas to New York Harbor was hacked, known as ransomware; ‘ransomware’ companies are forced to pay a ransom in exchange for unlocking their operating software. The colonial pipeline is important for the distribution of fuel to the United States: almost half of the fuel consumed on the east coast of the United States flows through it. The hack forced the colonial pipeline to shut down the network altogether – it had not yet been restarted. If the pipe connections are out of service for a long time, this can lead to an increase in fuel prices. It is not yet clear whether the company paid the ransom.
According to sources who spoke to Reuters news agency, the hack was allegedly carried out by cyber criminals belonging to the DarkSite consortium. The group is notorious for threatening large companies and donating a portion of its proceeds to charities. Economic Affairs Minister Gina Raimonto is set to address issues following President Joe Biden’s administration’s “priority” pipeline.
