Philips Ambilight TVs from 2023 lose Philips Hue feature

Philips Ambilight TVs without Hue integration

One Philips is not the other. While Philips TVs are made by one company (TVision), Philips Hue lights are made by a completely different company (Signify). They both put the “Philips” brand on their products, but operate completely independently. The TV maker has now officially confirmed that the Philips Hue integration is no longer there. There was already in the past various problems with this integration, for example because Gradient lamps are not supported by Ambilight TVs. And the Ambilight+Hue app also exists Not for a long time.

In addition, many possibilities remained untapped. For example, it has never been possible to control the LED lamps of an Ambilight TV when the TV is off.

Ambilight Philips Hue

Ambilight is the color technology of Philips televisions, thanks to which the colors of the screen are projected onto the wall. It gives a lot more atmosphere and provides an immersive experience while watching a movie. You can make it even more beautiful by connecting the Hue lamps to Ambilight, so that the whole room gets coloured. This is Ambilight+Hue.

With an Ambilight TV, you can let the LED lights on the back of your TV respond to picture and sound. To make it work, you need a Philips Ambilight TV from recent years (i.e. 2022 and earlier). You also need a Hue bridge, preferably the newer model.

The TV must be connected to the bridge for it to work. Of course, you also need a few colored Philips Hue lamps or light strips, because you can’t see them with lamps in shades of white. Lights need to be connected to the Bridge and the Hue app needs to be installed on your iPhone – but this will often already be the case for people who already use Philips Hue. Also, your TV must be properly configured and connected to your home WiFi network.

You are buying a Philips Ambilight TV from around 400 euros in stores such as Coolblue. At MediaMarkt you can from around 300 euros.

Hue Sync Box

And now?
If you already have an Ambilight TV, you can continue to use the feature. If you are planning to buy a new Ambilight TV from Philips from the 2023 range, the connection with Hue lamps is no longer possible. Might as well opt for a television from another brand. Signify to the Philips Hue Sync Box (around 250 euros), which works with almost all brands of TVs. For recent Samsung TVs (from 2022), there’s the pricey $129 Hue Sync TV app that lets you sync your lights with whatever’s on screen.

You can use a Philips Hue light strip to color the wall. Signify also offers special light strips that you can stick to the back of TVs and monitors. If you don’t fancy buying a Sync Box, the Nanoleaf 4D Lightstrip for TV has recently become available.
