Arkane studio head: “We are in the shadow of Bethesda” | News

Redfall vs. Starfield

Harvey Smith, the studio head of developer Arkane Studios, sometimes feels like he’s been overshadowed by other Bethesda studios.

Smith makes his revelations in a new interview with PCGamesN. He talks about his 15-year career at Arkane, during which he released several games. According to him, the timing of these releases sometimes clashed with other big Bethesda games.

“I’ve been at it for 15 years, and you could say I’ve been in the shadow of Bethesda Games Studios all that time,” Smith says. “We released a great game like Dishonored, they released Skyrim, and it’s the greatest thing ever. We released Dishonored 2 – the best game I’ve ever made – and they’re doing great stuff Fallout. thing.”

Yet he also sees it as an advantage to be a small studio within a publisher with several larger developers. “It takes the pressure off us, honestly. Arkane is often the underdog, we’re smaller than most teams. It would be terrible to feel bad about that, like, ‘oh, I’m in a company with a lot of people. ‘other good teams making other games’. For us, that’s a strength.”

Also this year, the studio is releasing a new game around the same time as another major Bethesda game. Redfall will be released on May 2, while the highly anticipated Starfield will be released on September 6.

Smith isn’t worried about Redfall being overshadowed by this game. “Starfield is going to be a big thing and it will delight a lot of people for years to come, but it’s very different from Redfall. There’s some overlap in the audience, but not completely, and we definitely have a different tone. But I’m glad they exist and I’m going to play a lot at Starfield.”
