More and more countries, including the United States, are recognizing the Moroccan character of the Sahara. It has been more than a month since the United States did this. Now Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Borita wants European countries to do the same by “leaving their comfort zone and following in the footsteps of the United States.”
A virtual conference held last Friday discussed the Moroccan plan to unite 40 countries and grant autonomy to the Sahara provinces under Moroccan oversight. In particular, Borita returned to Europe, saying they had to leave their comfort zone and take a bold step.
According to Borita, the solution to years of conflict should focus on autonomy. He says the old continent says there is a practice outside of convenience. Borita says Morocco has been supportive of the case for decades. He also calls on Europe to follow the international trend.
“For twenty years, US governments have supported autonomy as a solution,” the minister said. Surprisingly, neighboring Spain did not attend the meeting.
