While military doctors abroad play a key role in the planning and administration of the Govt vaccination program, their presence in key positions in the Netherlands is undesirable. Surprise grows about this.
Foreign examples abound. In the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States, senior officials play a key role in the vaccination campaign. Countries with a certain percentage are all better than us.
The military used swine flu in 2009
Former Army doctor Angela Hume does not understand how valuable the contribution of military logistics planners was in 2009. He was asked by the Ministry of Health to join a colleague and staff who led the swine flu vaccination program.
It was the first European country to vaccinate millions of fellow countrymen who were part of a risk group within six weeks. According to Hume, the military vision of ‘mission’ helped.
“We got a clear goal from the minister and we are going for it. We were given the post of logistics director and had enough diligence to arrange things.”
Lieutenant Commander Hume sat down for tea at the Ministry of Health in November with his former colleague to discuss their experiences.
In the United Kingdom, the military provides 150 medical programs
She thinks it has nothing to do with it, and she thinks it’s sad. He sees the 2009 Dutch approach echoed in the United Kingdom, where the Armed Forces offers 150 medical programs. It is expected that 14 million people will be vaccinated by mid-February. Only half a million in the Netherlands.
Former Army Commander Mart de Groof thinks the troops can also make a good contribution. Not only do they have more knowledge about key action plans, but mainly because they provide a clear command structure.
‘This has no direction’
The Netherlands does not have 25 security zones and many GGT areas. As a result, decision-making in times of crisis is slower, and all concerned executives want to say, it does not increase efficiency. “There is no direction now,” the retired general concludes
The VWS Ministry has announced that the logistics of the vaccination program will be kept at RIVM. “RIVM has a lot of experience from the National Immunization Program,” says a spokesman. He points out that RIVM has two security staff to assist with planning. However, according to security, they did not fulfill the directing roles.
