The bird hatched in 2011 in the New Zealand Bird Park of Pukaha. His white coat was very rare and the result of a special genetic trait.
Unfertilized egg
The bird’s keepers recently noticed that she was losing weight. The rare white kiwi, called Manukura, was walking around with an unfertilized egg. Although the surgery to remove the egg was successful, the bird’s health subsequently deteriorated.
Manukura’s death was announced on the Bird Park Instagram page: “She will be sorely missed.”
During his first year, Manukura was thought to be male, but later turned out to be female. “Another surprise from this extraordinary bird,” experts said at the time.
“ Quirky personality ”
The name of the animal means “prestige” in the traditional Maori language. Since the bird hatched, the bird park has been inundated with visitors wishing to see the rare kiwi.
The manager of the ornithological park tells us The Guardian that there will be a place where visitors can pay their last respects to Manukura and “his idiosyncratic personality”.
“Introvert. Avid gamer. Wannabe beer advocate. Subtly charming zombie junkie. Social media trailblazer. Web scholar.”
