Venezuelans who fled to the United States are allowed to stay for now

The US government wants to grant temporary residence permits to Venezuelans who have fled to the United States. They are not evicted and can seek employment.

According to the United States, Venezuela has become a country that cannot protect its own citizens. It is currently not safe to return to Venezuela, according to the White House. During the reign of President Maduro, the country has been going through a deep economic and humanitarian crisis in recent years. Millions of people have fled Venezuela.

It is estimated that the temporary residence permit is requested by 320,000 people. Applicants must provide proof of residence in the United States by March 8. The residence permit is initially valid for eighteen months.

Punishments

The Biden government wants to review the sanctions against Venezuela. President Biden wants a different approach than his predecessor Trump, who increased sanctions to get Maduro out. It did not work. Biden does not want to lift the sanctions per se, but rather uses them more specifically so that citizens are not unnecessarily affected by them.

The United States also wants to do more with countries in Latin America, the EU and the Caribbean to pressure Maduro to call fair elections.
