Van Vleuten firmly in the lead of the Giro Donne after the fall of a competitor

Annemiek van Vleuten has further increased her lead in the general classification of the Giro Donne. The 40-year-old cockade herself fell from second position on the difficult descent to the finish, but her main competitor Elisa Longo Borghini also crashed behind her around the same time. The Italian lost a lot of time, while Van Vleuten was able to recover quickly.

German Antonia Niedermaier, 20, won the 106 kilometer stage to Ceres thanks to an attack 26 kilometers from the finish. Movistar driver Van Vleuten followed at 9 seconds. New Zealand’s Niamh Fisher-Black took third place by over a minute.

Van Vleuten started the fifth stage 49 seconds ahead of number 2 Longo Borghini. The Italian was more than 5 minutes late. Niedermaier and American Veronica Ewers are now the main competitors for the Dutch, with a gap of more than 2 minutes. Van Vleuten is the defending champion and also won the Italian race in 2018 and 2019. The women’s Giro d’Italia lasts until Sunday.

According to Van Vleuten, it was “a difficult but perfect day”. His main objective, to save time on the other riders in the classification, has been achieved. “I also went for the stage win, but due to my incorrect assessment on the downhill it wasn’t possible. Luckily the damage wasn’t too bad. It was another exciting race and attractive for women’s cycling, I think.”
