The United States wants to work with Russia to make the world a safer place. But if Moscow behaves “aggressively,” Americans will respond. That’s what US Secretary of State Anthony Blingen said. Blingen met with his Russian envoy, Sergei Lavrov, for a “constructive conversation.”

Blingen and Lavrov met on Wednesday for the first time since the election of US President Joe Biden at a meeting on the fringes of the Arctic Council in Reykjavik, Iceland. “Our vision is that if the leaders of Russia and the United States can work together, the world will be a safer place,” Blingen said earlier. Lavrov was ready to talk about anything, “if the discussion is fair and presented on the basis of mutual respect.”

Their conversation lasted almost two hours in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavk. The Russian minister said he had a “constructive” conversation with his American opponent. According to Lavrov, the two countries understand the need to end the “unhealthy climate” of the past years in their relationship. Lavrov said he felt that Americans, like the Russians, would not expel diplomats. This has happened many times in recent years. “No one was helping that chain reaction,” he said.

The US Secretary of State has expressed his “deep concern” over the movements of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine, according to his spokesman. The health of Russian rival Alexei Navalny will also be discussed.

On Wednesday evening, it was announced that Washington would not impose sanctions on North Stream 2, a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany. The Biden government decided to save North Stream AG and its director, the main company in the project. The Americans did not want to oppose friendly Germany.
