The governments of the United States and Canada have been resolving their trade dispute for the past few months. The Trump administration announced Tuesday that the 10 percent import tax on Canadian aluminum will be repealed if it imports aluminum from Canada. Canada later announced that it would not act on previous retaliatory threats.
The U.S. government said it had decided to raise tariffs after consulting with Canadians, finding that US imports of Canadian aluminum would halve from September to December this year.
US President Donald Trump last month imposed a tariff on aluminum after an increase in imports across the U.S. northern border. Canadian Commerce Secretary Mary NG said Tuesday the U.S. announcement marks the end of some “incredibly difficult” months for Canadian manufacturers.
“Canada has not agreed to anything,” Secretary NG told a news conference. “If the US government decides to reintroduce tariffs on Canadian aluminum products, we reserve the right to take counter-measures.”
Unilateral decision
The US trade body USDR expects the United States to import 70,000 to 83,000 tons of Canadian aluminum by December. According to the USDR, if that amount exceeds 5 percent a month, the United States will impose a 10 percent tax on that month’s imports.
This is a unilateral decision, according to Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Christiaan Freeland, in response to questions about the allocation. “It simply came to our notice then. We have not negotiated an agreement on the quota, ”he said.
