The US and Chinese ministers are in Alaska for a two-day meeting. This is the first summit meeting between the superpowers since the inauguration of new US President Joe Biden. Blinken is present on behalf of the United States, and for China, senior diplomat Yang Jiechi and Foreign Secretary Wang Yi have visited Alaska.
Blinken expressed concern, among other things, about cyber attacks against the United States. He also announced that he wanted to talk about the situation in Hong Kong and Taiwan and China’s “economic coercion” on US allies.
In a ten-minute opening statement from Yang, the diplomat accused the United States of interfering in internal affairs, among other things. The United States has accused China of violating the protocol after speaking for longer than the two minutes allotted. According to China, it was precisely the US officials who spoke for too long in their opening statement. The diplomats were said to have been “inhospitable” and made unreasonable accusations about China’s domestic and foreign policy, state media reported. According to a Chinese diplomat, the Americans have also “caused an argument”.
Blinken has harshly criticized China in recent days. The minister accused Beijing of systematically undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy and violating human rights in Tibet and Xinjiang. In Xinjiang, critics say the Uyghur minority is oppressed. Blinken has already made it clear as the summit approaches that he wants to use the meeting in Alaska to share his concerns in “clear terms” with his Chinese colleagues. The Biden government has made it clear that it will not hesitate to take on China.
China has announced in advance that it will not make concessions on crucial issues. The Chinese State Department has called on Americans to engage in “a sincere and constructive manner.” “China has no room to compromise on issues related to its sovereignty, security and fundamental interests,” a spokesperson for the Chinese ministry said.
