The French Stéphanie Frappart (37) has been appointed to lead the match in Amsterdam. Never before has a part of Orange been whistled by a woman.
Frappart made his Champions League debut last year, in the Juventus – Dinamo Kiev game (3-0).
She also refereed the 2019 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands. This match was lost by the Lionesses 2-0.
Frappart has been a referee for the National Championship, the third division of men’s football in France, since 2011. She has also been active at the highest level in her native country for a few years now.
Orange captain Virgil van Dijk, currently injured, experienced Frappart in 2019. She then led the European Super Cup match between Liverpool and Chelsea. “If someone has quality, and she did it because otherwise she wouldn’t have been nominated for this game, then that’s fine,” Van Dijk said at the time. “I think she deserves this game. Take a look at his CV. She whistled so many good matches. A person’s gender is irrelevant. Coach Jürgen Klopp said at the time that “the time has come for this”.
The match with Latvia is part of the second round of the World Cup qualifying series. In the first round of play, the Dutch will meet Turkey next Wednesday and this match will be chaired by England’s Michael Oliver. João Pedro Silva Pinheiro of Portugal has been nominated for Gibraltar – Netherlands on March 30.
