The US government has responded with little enthusiasm to Ukraine’s request to allow NATO membership. Ukrainian President Zelensky wants his country to have access to a special NATO program for countries wishing to join the European / American military alliance.
Of last days Tensions in eastern Ukraine are on the rise again and, according to Zelensky, membership in NATO is the only means of peace in his country. Moreover, it would send a clear signal to Russia which supports the separatists in the East.
Spokesman for US President Biden said Ukrainians have long wanted to join NATO and the US government is talking to them as well. “But only NATO is about membership.”
According to the US State Department, the door to NATO is still open for countries reaching the bar, but Ukraine is not yet ready. “Reforms still need to be made to create a more stable, democratic, prosperous and free country.” The Pentagon, for its part, pointed out that NATO had already decided in 2018 that Ukraine would join the alliance, but did not elaborate further.
Zelensky approaches NATO leaders
In recent days, President Zelensky has personally made his appeal to various NATO leaders, including Secretary General Stoltenberg. This reflected the alliance’s serious concerns about Russia’s military activities.
NATO continues to work closely with Ukraine, Stoltenberg tweeted:
“Infuriatingly humble social media ninja. Devoted travel junkie. Student. Avid internet lover.”
