Twitter has the account @POTUS officially handed over to the new US President Joe Biden. This happened on Wednesday evening during the inauguration of the country’s 46th president.
The POTUS Twitter account, which stands for President of the United States, is always handed over to the new President. It is the official channel through which the President can address his constituencies. A week ago, Twitter wrote in a blog post how the account would be transferred from Trump to Biden.
Biden needs to collect subscribers again, as previous subscribers from the POTUS account will not automatically transfer. Trump’s POTUS account, along with all tweets, are classified as @ POTUS45. This also happened with Barack Obama’s account, which can be found as @ POTUS44.
Biden has 24.5 million subscribers on his private account. It is up to the president to determine which account to use. Trump communicated primarily through his own @realDonaldTrump account, where he had 90 million followers, until Twitter opened his account permanently blocked. This happened in response to his role in the assault on the Capitol on January 6.
In addition to the POTUS account, the other official White House accounts, the vice president, the first lady and the press spokesperson have also been transferred.
