Heavy rain and winds are expected from Miami to Naples until Tuesday, with thunderstorms of up to four feet in parts of South Florida and the Keys. Schools close and shelters open as the government prepares for Etta
Districts announced on social media on Monday that at least five school districts in South Florida, including Miami-Tate, will be closed due to the potential impact of Etta.
In Miami-Tate, Mayor Carlos Kimenes said all bridges were locked Sunday. He said winds of 40 to 60 mph were expected from Sunday night until Monday afternoon and a hurricane was likely.
At Oakland Park, heavy rains and flooding already have the city’s public works system “at or near capacity”, Auckland Park Public Information Officer David Rafter said.
“Oakland Park Public Works and Parks staff work all night and resolve flood-related concerns throughout the day to the best of our ability,” Rafter said at the tropical storm Etta update.
According to the NWS, sailors are being warned to stay out of the water as very strong winds can cause dangerous waves.
Third landslide to Etta
Emergency disaster plans are in place in Cuba and Mexico, while relief efforts continue in Guatemala and Honduras, which have so far been severely affected.
In Honduras, 38 people have died, eight are missing and more than 60,000 have been evicted from their homes, according to the country’s permanent contingency commission.
Guatemala’s National Disaster Reduction Coordinator (CONRED) said on Saturday that 116 people were missing, largely due to a landslide in the remote village of Quijo in the central Alta Verapas region.
At least 8,938 people have been evicted and 5,780 are staying in temporary shelters, the company said.
Although the season has been very active, this is the first named hurricane to cause landslides in Florida this year and the 12th named hurricane to hit the American continent this season, the heaviest in a year.
