Stadswerk Nederland formulated 32 action points “for an attractive public space”. The intention is that the suggestions be incorporated into electoral programs and local politics.
The organization sent the Guidelines for the 2022 municipal elections to the 352 municipal councils. The recommendations are spread across eight social themes, such as circularity and public health promotion. “These points can be included directly in an electoral program or an environmental vision”, point out the manufacturers. Most of the municipalities themselves are affiliated with Stadswerk.
As green as it gets
“Organize neighborhoods as green as possible,” suggests the guide, for example, “inviting to meet and stay in the open”. How? ‘Or’ What? “Offer a park for all within 500 meters, preferably with continuous connections with the surrounding nature in the countryside. The fight against the missing links in the network of cycle paths is also mentioned, as is the prevention of flooding of trees and plants.
Practical examples
Each topic contains references to additional information. “Increasing the attractiveness of the municipality for and with residents, entrepreneurs and visitors” is completed by an article from Gemeente.nu: Digital participation: municipalities share their knowledge and software. Practical examples may also appear familiar to the reader of this site. This is how the cycling town of Houten is called when it comes to accessibility.
Green manifesto
Nature and garden organizations have previously called for more attention to green living in municipal elections. With their manifesto “Everyone has the right to a green living environment”, they hope to help politics on its way.
