The redevelopment of the Nachtegaalstraat in Utrecht will start on January 4. In the new route, there will be more space for pedestrians and cyclists will become the main users of the street. There will also be more trees and greenery on the street.
The work will last until May, as planned. Until then, pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the Nachtegaalstraat. Cars cannot cross the Nachtegaalstraat during construction; that are hijacked.
The aim of the redesign is to make the street more pleasant for residents and buyers. The street must also become a better road for cyclists, as the number of cyclists is expected to continue to increase.
During the past year there was also work on the Nachtegaalstraat, but then work on utilities.
Stormwater drainage
In addition to more trees and greenery, there will also be places more suitable for gable gardens, larger tree sections and cobblestones. These measures help to drain rainwater into the ground, instead of the sewer. This should help prevent flooding.
In addition, there must be better level crossings and the number of bicycle parking spaces will increase from 200 to 300. All innovations have been made in collaboration with residents and contractors on and around the Nachtegaal.
After the completion of the redevelopment of the Nachtegaalstraat, it is also the turn of the adjacent Burgemeester Reigerstraat. Work is expected to start there in November 2021.
