The municipality of Waalwijk has joined the Steenbreek Foundation. This foundation supports the municipalities with a package of activities in order to convert the negative consequences of fossilization into the positive effects of greening. Municipalities determine their own approach, working with residents, organizations and businesses. In the Netherlands, more than 150 municipalities, five water boards and six provinces are now affiliated to the foundation.
Our climate is changing and it shows. More and more often we have to deal with huge showers, heat or a long period of drought. Heavy downpours often cause nuisance: streets or basements can be flooded. And remember that prolonged heat causes health problems for many people. This has several causes. However, various studies have shown that increasing pavements has real negative effects on the well-being of humans, animals and nature.
Green is life
Not only for humans, but also for animals, a green environment means healthier life. Due to the increase in petrification in private and public space, there is little room left for nature. When no flower grows, no insect comes and the (wild) bees cannot do their necessary work. Petrification also affects many species of birds and bats. In a stone environment you will find little to no life, certainly not under the tiles. While at least half of the species found in green spaces live below ground level. Soil is the basis of any living garden.
It’s time to act
“Green is one of our municipality’s priorities. With Green Agenda projects, among others, we are working hard to increase the quantity and improve the quality of greenery in public spaces. Despite all the measures taken in the public space, the help of all residents of Waalwijk is necessary. No less than 40% of the urban area is owned by individuals. So we cannot do it alone, ”said Councilor Dilek Odabasi.
President Wout Veldstra of the Steenbreek Foundation: “Everyone can make a contribution by taking care of the greening of their own garden, their own street and all business parks today. By adding more greenery to towns and villages and more ecological (agricultural) management ”. With the added benefit that with more greenery, rainwater can properly penetrate the ground, the sewers are less loaded, the temperature in the city is lowered, fine dust is captured and people feel better and healthier. better health. In addition, the physical and social quality of life of the neighborhood and the neighborhood is increasing.
Together, we can make a difference and guarantee a healthy and climate-proof living environment for humans and animals!
