At least 4,000 people have been evacuated due to a forest fire on the Spanish island of La Palma. The fire is not yet under control and seems to be spreading. A forest fire also broke out in Tenerife, another Canary Island.
The fire in La Palma, one of the smaller Canary Islands, was first reported on Saturday morning. Quite quickly several hundred people were evacuated. That number has now risen to 4,255, the archipelago’s government reports.
The fire has now affected 4,500 hectares of land and destroyed thirteen homes. The fire only spreads further. This growth is driven by a combination of wind, drought and persistent heat.
Even though the fire is getting bigger, there are still many people who don’t want to evacuate. “There are residents who do not want to leave their homes,” Canarian President Fernando Clavijo said on Saturday.
In addition to La Palma, a forest fire is also raging in Tenerife, one of the largest Canary Islands. This fire is much smaller and has so far affected an area of 50 hectares. About 50 people were evacuated following the fire.
