It is not clear who was behind the attack.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the U.S. Department of Commerce have been the victims of cyberbullying, the agency said, and a source known for the breach confirmed the ABC news.
“We can confirm that there has been a breach at one of our bureaus. We have asked the CISA and the FBI to investigate. We cannot comment further at this time,” the Commerce Department said in a statement Sunday.
A source familiar with the investigation told ABC News that it was a sophisticated attack and that very few companies had such capabilities. Authorities are investigating whether the Russian government was behind the breach, which could reach beyond the treasury and business sectors.
“The U.S. government is aware of these reports and is taking all necessary steps to identify any issues related to this situation and address them,” NSC spokesman John Uliot told ABC News.
The Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, told ABC News that it was assisting in the investigation.
“We are working closely with our corporate partners on the recently discovered activity in government networks. CISA provides technical assistance to affected companies to find any compromises and mitigate them.”
