Nearly the past decade of baseball in Los Angeles for the Angels has been nothing short of disappointing. Another disappointing act happened on Tuesday after they decided to fire head coach Joe Maddon after only two seasons.
The decision was reached after the Angels lost their 12th consecutive game. Phil Nevin will be taking on the duties of being the next manager for the Angels. This was undoubtedly the biggest sports news of the day.
When thinking about the Los Angeles Angels, it’s time to start comparing this organization to the likes of the Sacramento Kings in the NBA. Neither of them can find any sort of success despite having rosters that are more than capable of winning games in their respective league.
Let’s look below at why the Los Angeles Angels have been the most disappointing team in the past ten years.
Mike Trout And Shohei Ohtani’s Careers Are Being Wasted
For baseball fans’ sake, it would be best if the Angels decided to go into some crazy rebuild mode and get rid of both Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Whatever anybody wants to say about the Los Angeles Angels, there is no denying that these two guys are the best two players in all of baseball.
Mike Trout might not only be the best player in baseball right now, but he has a legitimate chance of going down as the greatest player of all time.
For that to happen, Trout needs to get to the postseason. Mike Trout made his debut with the Los Angeles Angels in 2011 and has only participated in one playoff since then. This is completely embarrassing for the Los Angeles Angels and all of Major League Baseball. If Trout is going to go down as the best player that’s ever played the sport, he needs more postseason experience.
Although he is still only 30 years old, he isn’t getting any younger. It will be in the best interest of baseball fans if Mike Trout does somehow get out of Los Angeles. No matter where he ends up, it truly can’t be in a much worse place than with the Angels.
Fourth Manager In Four Years
You can always tell when an organization is down in the dumps when you look at how many managers they have had recently. For Los Angeles, this is going to be their fourth head coach since 2018. Mike Scioscia was their skipper for 18 seasons before Brad Ausmus took over in 2019, Maddon got the job in 2020, and now Nevin will be the interim manager in 2022.
If the Los Angeles Angels are going to eventually be the type of team that can compete in this league, they need to find a competent head coach. Phil Nevin is clearly not going to be the solution to any of these issues, but maybe, just maybe, it enlightens this struggling team.
Have Not Made The Playoffs Since 2014
Not making the postseason for nearly ten years might be the biggest embarrassment out of everything that the Los Angeles Angels have done throughout the past decade. This is now one of the biggest playoff droughts in MLB history.
When also factoring in that they literally have the two best players in the world, it makes it even more embarrassing. The reason behind most of these struggles for Los Angeles is because of their incompetent ownership.
Before this season, the Los Angeles Angels would make 0 moves to better their pitching staff. It does not matter how well you can swing the bats in this league if you do not have elite-level pitching, you are not going to find success.
It is going to be tough for the Angels to get where they want to be in the next few years, but if they can’t figure it out soon, it’s best to just get rid of all of their key guys and go into a rebuild mode. They want to keep living out this fantasy life with Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, but if they are not going to be able to get anything done, there’s no reason to continue this mess.
