Ahmed Tunis, a former Tunisian foreign minister and ambassador, says Algeria has its vision in neighboring Morocco. He is also pleased that the United States recognizes the Moroccan Sahara. For him it was a victory for all the Maghreb nations.
In an interview with al-Ayyam, the former Tunisian politician denounced Algeria for trying to rule the region. “Fortunately, the Kingdom of Morocco has been able to move away from dominant politics. Thank God the Kingdom is built on a strong and solid foundation,” the ambassador said. He says the Algerian regime has been doing all it can to destroy Morocco since the attack on Amgala.
Onois said the US recognition of the Sahara as a Moroccan territory was a victory for the region. “This is a victory that will save us from Algeria. That is why we support Morocco,” the minister said. Owenois illustrates how Algeria pressured the former president of Tunisia to give up Tunisian territory.
The former ambassador to Moscow also supports statements by former President Moncef Merzouki on the issue. “Tunisia does not accept that Maghreb has six states and we condemn the Algerian military intervention,” he said. “Tunisia has never trusted a Sahrawi nation. We are behind the Marrakesh Agreement (1989, edition) that unites the five countries.” He also hopes that the Maghreb nations will work together to form an economic front.
