Carmaker Tesla has repeatedly violated the rights of its employees. Among other things, a message on Twitter by CEO Elon Musk was a violation of US law. It was governed by the National Labor Relations Board, which ensures in the United States that employees can stand up for the rights of their workers.
Tesla made a mistake, among others, by firing an employee who worked hard for a union. In addition, Musk’s comments on Twitter about the consequences of workers joining a union could be threatening.
In a questionable tweet, Musk wrote, “Why are you paying the outstanding amount to the union and leaving your stock options for no reason”. In doing so, he recommended withdrawing this bonus from unionized employees, the National Labor Relations Board found. Intimidation of unionized workers is illegal in the United States.
Tesla has now been ordered to re-employ the laid-off employee. Musk should also remove the Twitter post about stock options coming from 2018. The National Labor Liaison Board does not have the power to impose fines. It is still possible to appeal against the verdict.
Tesla always maintained that he had done nothing wrong. The company was not immediately available for comment.
