Taiwan Looking for Truck Driver Who Could Have Caused Train Crash | NOW

Taiwanese prosecutors on Saturday issued an arrest warrant for a construction manager whose truck allegedly caused Friday’s fatal train crash. At least 51 people have been killed and more than 150 injured.

The suspect was briefly questioned on Friday, but that questioning had to be interrupted and postponed after he burst into tears. He was no longer able to answer questions.

The accident, the worst train accident in Taiwan in seven decades, occurred after an express train struck a truck that slid along a bank beside the track from a construction site. The site manager is suspected of not having applied the brakes correctly.

The train was carrying nearly 500 people and was traveling from the capital Taipei east of Taitung when it derailed in a tunnel just north of Hualien, which also lies along the east coast of Taiwan.

On Saturday, the debris cleanup began. It started with the displacement of the rear part of the train, which had come to rest in relatively good condition outside the tunnel.

The government asked the people of Taiwan to hang flags at half mast on Saturday and declared a three-day period of mourning.
