“Suriname is a relatively safe country” – Suriname Herald

“Suriname is a relatively safe country and everyone knows it. There has been a drop in crime in the country. In 2019, we saw an average decline of 16% in burglaries, thefts and robberies. In 2020, crime will have fallen further to 20%. It gives a good picture and the numbers are there, ”said Police Chief Roberto Prade in a conversation with the Suriname Herald.

“We are heading in the right direction with our country in the fight against crime. A lot of work is done to ensure safety, but there is room for improvement. There is still some way to go. Everything is not yet what it should be, but we are going. It may not seem like it is, but it’s going well, ”repeats the police chief.

It also indicates that a number of cases have been resolved over the past year thanks to information received by the police. We have succeeded in arresting a number of criminals because we have changed the working system, says Prade.

“We should not be dissatisfied, we now work differently. The work is being done on the basis of the information collected and because of these actions a number of serious criminals have been arrested, ”the policeman said.

According to Prade, there are still a number of steps to be taken, and when they are, we will experience further declines in crime and other problems.
