In the coming week and a half, it will be determined in Morocco which football club can call themselves the best in the world. The FIFA Club World Cup kicks off tonight with the match between Egyptian club Al-Ahly and New Zealand’s Auckland City FC.
The opening match begins at 8 p.m. at the Ibn Batouta stadium in Tangier.
The Club World Cup opposes the champions of the six continental organizations of FIFA, supplemented by a club of the organizing country. Because Moroccan Wydad Casablanca won the African Champions League last year, Al-Ahly is also welcome as a losing runner-up.
Champions League winners Real Madrid compete on behalf of UEFA. Flamengo have won the Copa Libertadores and represent Latin America.
Real Madrid and Flamengo will only contest the semi-finals on February 7-8. Their opponents from other continents face each other in the first and second rounds for the other places in the semi-finals. The final will take place on Saturday 11 February.
The FIFA Club World Cup took place for the first time in 2000, when Corinthians of Brazil won. After the second edition in 2005, it has been held every year. The last winner was Chelseawho beat Palmeiras in the final.
