Overall, the greenery in the area around the Telderskade is increasing and the height of the residential tower has not yet been set in stone, assures Alderman Fleur Spijker in an interview with Sleutelstad. In doing so, it responds to the reactions of local residents to redevelopment plans for the Telderskade and the surrounding area.

The Leiden City Council recently shared its plans for the Telderskade and the surrounding area with the City Council. At the first meeting of the urban development council committee, residents also had the opportunity to respond to the plans. The neighborhood is happy with the redevelopment, but is concerned about the height and quantity of the proposed new construction. Alderman Fleur Spijker is delighted that the frameworks for the plans have been determined and explains that the details have not yet been established.

Alderman Fleur Spijker talks to Nieuws071 about the Telderskade environmental plan.

In addition to the construction of 400 housing units, the redevelopment plans also include an indoor sports center, a new school building for Leonardo College and Huis van de Buurt. Leiden College consciously chooses to tackle the whole neighborhood at the same time. “We are developing it all. So much is happening now, you better tackle everything at the same time, ”says Spijker.

Residential tower
Spijker understands that local residents are concerned about the possible construction of a seventy-meter-high residential tower. “I can imagine that you are thinking: oh my God, a little high. But at the same time, it also ensures that there are variations in the neighborhood and, last but not least, many additional houses, ”explains the alderman. It is not yet certain that the tower will actually be built. Spijker: “What’s in the plan is what’s possible. Which suits the southwest. We will see if the tower really appears in the construction plans ”.

The people of Telderskade and the surrounding area find it difficult to keep the greenery clear for construction. Spijker also understands this: “Overall there will be more greenery in the neighborhood. The neighborhood also deserves to add this. We must build and for that, we must remove the greenery. But you will see, when it is over, that a beautiful green image is created.
