The man who was shot dead in Suriname last night was a moped driver who had caused a collision on the corner of Gijsbertusstraat and Tourtonnelaan in Paramaribo shortly before. Then he allegedly threatened with a shotgun.
The moped, presumably a Brazilian, did not yield to a policeman driving at the aforementioned intersection. The two decided to settle this between themselves. At one point the moped tried to drive off but was stopped by someone close to the officer.
Eventually the man managed to get away, after which he returned shortly afterwards with a shotgun. He threatened to shoot the family member with it. This person took refuge behind a car.
The moped then walked past the Farma Vida store opposite the Gijsbertusstraat. There he had an altercation with two strangers in a car. The biker aimed his shotgun at the two men on this occasion.
In response, one of the men in the car pulled out a handgun and fired, aiming at the moped. He was hit in the shoulder and in the head, so that he died there.
The case is still under investigation by the Surinamese police. The shotgun was seized.
