Serbia has so many vaccines there is a choice, and buses from neighboring countries are arriving

Anyone wishing to be vaccinated must complete an online form and register. You can tick which means you choose: AstraZeneca, Pfizer / BioNTech, Sputnik or Sinopharm. After the injection appointment, you will receive a reminder for the second vaccination a few weeks later. Doctors, teachers, nurses and refugees are now widely vaccinated.

The main reason why Serbia has such a stock of vaccines is the good relations with three superpowers. Beijing has a lot of investment in Serbia, and Moscow has also been an important ally for years. Brussels is not happy geopolitically, Serbia also wants to join the EU.

The diplomatic balancing act gives Belgrade access to vaccines from east and west. Balkan correspondent David Jan Godfroid: “The Serbs have enough doses and few countries can tell.”

Opposition

The fast pace also has a downside, Godfroid explains. “People who want to get vaccinated are slowly getting exhausted.” Because just like in the rest of Europe, there is resistance to the vaccination program. Add to this the fact that in Serbia there is already considerable mistrust of the government.

Last week, a number of prominent anti-vaccination activists were arrested in Belgrade. Well-known psychiatrist Jovana Stojkovic was questioned at the police station on Thursday on suspicion of causing fear with her performances and social media posts. Five others were also arrested.
