480 euros a dog owner has to cough because his dog attacked a seal and he encouraged him and certainly did not prevent him. The facts date back to last year, but the fine was recently imposed. It was an employee of the Ostend police who saw on the Klein Strand in Ostend how the man encouraged his dog to approach a seal.
The dog lashed out and eventually bit the seal – which was trying to defend itself – in the tail. The walker made no move to call his dog to order, reports Nieuwsblad.
The area around the west pier is a well-known resting place for seals. The town hall of Ostend has therefore put up signs and asks walkers to leave the animals alone and to stay at least twenty meters away from them. “But this man with his dog disturbed the seal’s peace,” police said. “He was bitten on the tail and may have been injured. It was therefore a matter of deliberately and significantly disrupting the seal.
The environmental control service of the Ostend police has published an official report. The offender was fined 480 euros. “It’s a clear signal and you can call it a boost for the North Seal team volunteers,” police said. “They are committed day after day to guaranteeing the peace of the seals. We will also keep an eye out for walkers and other beach visitors who disturb the animals’ rest. “
