Cycling team SD Worx and sprinter Lorena Wiebes are aiming for stage wins in the Giro Donne, which starts on Friday. The winning team also includes Femke Markus, New Zealander Niamh Fisher-Black, Hungarian Blanka Vas, Briton Anna Shackley and Italian riders Elena Cecchini and Barbara Guarischi.
“In the Giro Donne we don’t start with an outspoken leader,” says sporting director Anna van der Breggen. ,,Of course we are aiming for stage wins with Wiebes, but we also hope that Fisher-Black can make a good general classification. According to Van der Breggen, the team also consists of buccaneers. “It means we can run free. When it comes back, we always have Wiebes for the sprint.
SD Worx will not debut in Italy with leading women Demi Vollering, Lotte Kopecky and Marlen Reusser. “It means an opportunity for these young girls to assess racing situations themselves and help determine the race,” says Van der Breggen. “You learn a lot working for a leader, but it’s also good for their development that they have opportunities for themselves and have to work together to achieve that goal.”
Wiebes has already won stages of the Giro in 2021 in the jersey of Team DSM. “I’m aiming for a stage win. Even the prologue is a goal, although the Sunday and Monday stages in particular are marked in red. There is the greatest chance of a sprint.
