American scientists have discovered the strongest material on Earth. It is a mixture of chromium, cobalt and nickel.
The mixture of metals, CrCoNi, was discovered by researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Scientists conducted tests which showed that the mixture is about five times stronger than the strongest steel. It is also about fifteen times stronger than aluminum airliner frames.
The material becomes more resistant when cold. This is striking, as these types of metals often become stronger when heated.
Researchers began experimenting with the mixture nearly a decade ago. It took them a while to find a place where they could test the mixture. Forming a research team also took years. “Fortunately, the results are worth the wait,” say the researchers.
Scientists warn that the new mixture cannot be used immediately. This requires additional research first. “If you’re on an airplane, do you like the idea that the material to keep you from falling from great heights was only developed a few months ago? Or do you want the material to be tested a bit more a long time and that we understand. This is why it takes years, even decades, to apply the materials in the real world.
