Russia is expelling at least ten U.S. and three Polish ambassadors, and is seeing further reactions to US sanctions. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived with the news on Friday.
Lavrov said at least eight U.S. government employees would be on the permit list and that “painful actions” against U.S. companies in Russia were being investigated. Moscow is also watching the end of Russian operations by US funds and NGOs interfering in Russia’s internal affairs.
On Thursday, the United States announced the deportation of ten employees of the Russian embassy in Washington and the imposition of sanctions on more than 30 Russians or Russian companies. US banks will no longer be allowed to trade on Russian government debt. These measures have been taken in part due to Russian efforts to influence the 2020 US presidential election.
After the United States, Poland announced on Thursday that it would expel three Russian ambassadors.
