Ukraine’s military has made progress on the Russian-occupied eastern bank of the Dnipro River in southern Ukraine, British intelligence said on Saturday. Ukraine reportedly captured a so-called “bridgehead”. With this, the service refers to a territory near the river which, if successfully taken, can guarantee a fortress for a further advance.
Ukrainian troops have been heading for the river bank for about a week, according to the UK Ministry of Defence. However, the battle around the shore is complicated by the destruction of the nearby Kachovka dam on June 6 and subsequent flooding.
The city of Kherson, located on the west bank of the Dnipro, was recaptured by Ukrainian troops a few months ago, but large parts of the region are still under Russian control. Since the break of the dam, Russian troops have launched numerous attacks on the city. kyiv and Moscow hold each other responsible for the breach of the dam.
Ukraine is currently engaged in a counter-offensive, but this seems more difficult than expected. Ukraine is also reluctant to post victories. President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged last week that the counter-offensive is “more difficult than expected”.
