Round shapes dispel the angular furniture in the interior | NOW

The past year has been a financial tragedy for many industries, but not for home improvement stores and hardware stores. Ownership has grown in importance thanks to the pandemic. The question is which trends will be included in 2021. In any case, soft materials and organic forms, await the experts.

It’s not completely new, but round shapes seem to be becoming the dominant structure of living rooms, if you follow the magazines and live programs a bit.

According to Marianne Luning, stylist at vtwonen, all the big brands and manufacturers are attacking from the Milan international fair. “The angular shapes fade into the background. From sofas to side tables: everything takes on a more organic character, ”she says.

“No one is the boss of a round table.”

If it is necessary to seek contrasts, everything has been hard, heavy and robust for ten years. Industrial has been a dominant trend in interior design for many years.

“After a while, designers start looking for change,” Luning says. “The Scandinavian style was already such a counterpart. Everything has become lighter, lighter, simpler. The curves are on the rise. People who work with their interior are now more inclined to opt for a round or oval table.”

Person at the head of the table

In live blogs the round or oval table is also called “more cozy”. Either way, you’re more turned towards each other when you’re with large groups and therefore looking at more people than on a rectangular table. If large companies are still out of the question for a while, the argument still comes up regularly. “No one is the boss of a round table,” concludes Luning, referring to the person at the head of a rectangular table.

Denise van den Berg, designer and stylist at Own house and garden, also praises the “equality” of the round table. “No one is in a corner. And in general, a round table takes up less space. I’m sure it fits into any living room.”

New soft and cuddly trend

She finds it more important that the straight lines of an interior are broken thanks to round furniture and objects inside. “It could all be a little softer and more cuddly. That’s why plush fabric for sofas and chairs is so welcome. The kitchens, tables and chairs were all very stylish in recent years, with steel doors and right angles. Now the round mirrors come in, the colors are on the wall becomes a little quieter. The designers are building on that. “

Remember that most houses are a bit angular anyway, explains Marianne Luning. “They are like boxes. Furniture and accessories with organic shapes can soften the image.”

That doesn’t mean that everything has to be round from now on, underlines Van den Berg. “Look at your house and think about what works for you. In principle, round elements can add something to any home, but I would say that not all the interior has to be round at the same time.”

“I think, for example, that the trend for intermediate steel doors has not suddenly disappeared,” continues the designer. “I think the hard lines caused by black are less and less popular. You can already see steel doors with less steel and more glass. Plus, they are available in white and bronze, also colors more in line with 2021. “
