Students from the Eindhoven University of Technology once again won the robot football world championship on Sunday. Student team Tech United defeated chipmaker ASML’s Falcons team 6-2 in Bordeaux, France. This means that Eindhoven students can call themselves world champions for the seventh time.
During the Robot Football World Championship, autonomous robots play against each other. The robots themselves determine – with the help of special sensors and software – how they move on the field and to whom they play the ball. The robots are about 80 centimeters tall and play five against five. They play with an ordinary soccer ball.
This is the seventh time that the TU Eindhoven team has won the tournament, and the fourth time in a row. The benefit is mainly due to the improved maneuverability of the robots. Tech United’s robots have three steerable wheels. The player has also been improved. This allows the robots to increase their pace three times faster, with a speed of up to 7 meters per second.
Last year, robots from Eindhoven also faced team ASML in the final of the RoboCup. This then ended in a resounding victory for the Eindhoven team with 15-0.
Now the teams were more equal. According to a university spokesperson, both teams played defensively. Eindhoven led 2-0 at halftime.
The development of these types of robots is not just for fun. Improvements made for these competitions can also be implemented in care robots and robots used in rescue operations.
