In the center, many water sports enthusiasts practice their favorite sport, such as windsurfing. “The new Olympic class IQ-FOIL in particular is on the rise,” says Rick Jendrusch from Scharendijke.
Jendrusch is the initiator. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a youth training center here in Zeeland, although we have so much water and surfers here. You can outsmart from here to Bruinisse.”
Zeeland Olympic champion
There is a leading national sports center for sailing in Scheveningen. In addition, there is another regional training center in Almere, especially for windsurfing. “We would like to be the second training center so that you have one in the north and one in the south. We hope that one day we can become an Olympic champion in Zeeland.”
Water sports are one of the three basic sports in the province of Zeeland. This is why the member of the provincial executive Jo-Annes de Bat is enthusiastic about this initiative. He wants to think. “We want to give the talents that we have a platform. It starts by helping with training.”
According to Jendrusch, there is a lot of talent in Zeeland. “Absolutely!” He said firmly. “There are enough young people in the region who have a chance to train well and prove themselves in the future.”
No green light yet
However, the light is not yet green. “We have heard about the idea and want to contribute, but the amounts have not yet been discussed,” says De Bat. There should also be consultation with the water sports association.
Jendrusch is hoping for more clarity this spring so that central training can begin.
