New Netflix policy in America
In the United States, the sharing of passwords has been completely prohibited since May 23 of this year. It hasn’t been a bad decision on the part of the company so far. After starting with an average increase of around 73,000 subscribers, the streaming service has peaked at 100,000 new subscribers per day since the new account sharing policy. This number is the fastest increase since 2019, according to the study Antenna analysis company.
Despite criticism from users who have indicated they want to cancel their account, it seems that fewer people have actually done so. It is not yet possible to say anything about the long-term effect of the new policy. Antenna’s numbers are a multi-day snapshot, and only apply to the United States.
What about politics in the Netherlands?
Prohibiting password sharing is a new policy that Netflix has been working on for several months. You may have already noticed this, because in the Netherlands and Belgium you now have to pay to share an account. If you want to add someone to your account outside of a household, you pay an extra 3.99 euros per month. The various subscriptions are slightly more expensive in Belgium than in the Netherlands. It remains unclear whether the new US policy will also be implemented in other countries. Even if luck is of course there.
While the ban will of course impact many users, it’s understandable given Netflix’s growing competition. We secretly hope that the new regulations will not be introduced for some time.
