Playing in the snow was fatal for Kwibus (3): “ He enjoyed it for ten minutes ”

“There didn’t seem to be anything wrong,” says owner Gert Jan Bakker. Kwibus has always played in the garden, but today he ran away after ten minutes and finished playing. “Inside, he immediately went to bed. We rubbed him hot, but soon his back leg started to pull. Drool came out of his mouth and in his eyes we could see that it wasn’t okay.

Snow excitement

Within minutes, Kwibus was dead. “We think it was a combination of his weak heart and the excitement of the snow. And the cold must have played a role too.”

Gert Jan is going to bury Kwibus in the garden. “We’re going to try to make a hole. It’s sad. He would be four in the spring. He was still very young.”

Cat flap

It is unusual for a cat to die in the snow, explains Niels Dorland of Animal Protection. “I’ve never heard of it before. Cats usually take shelter when it’s too cold. That’s why in cold weather it’s important to bang on the hood of the car before setting off, because there might be a cat below. “

Dorland thinks most cats don’t feel like going out today. “Cats are warmth-seeking animals.” In principle, cats outside in winter are not bothered by the cold, but it is important that they can always go inside. It is helpful if the cat flap is functioning properly. “If domestic cats find it too cold outside, they will naturally stay inside.”

Scrub dogs to dry them

Dogs can also get cold in the snow. It is therefore important that the dogs keep moving. Especially when they are riding and playing in the snow. In extreme cold, according to Animal Protection, it is useful to lubricate the soles of the feet with petroleum jelly or a special tar that you can buy from the vet.

Eating snow is not good for a dog, it can cause pain in the stomach and stomach. Also licking road salt is not good, so a dog can be poisoned by the salt. Animal Protection has one final tip: rub your dog dry after walking and provide him with a place to warm up.
