VLAARDINGEN – Last week, sailor Pim van Vugt from Vlaardingen organized the first round of the season in Lanzarote. This 6-day event was perhaps the last official race before the Olympics, only the Dutch Medemblik event, the Allianz Regatta, is currently on the agenda. So it was an important tournament for the Dutch 49er duo.
The 49er class victory went to Diego Botin and Iago Lopez (ESP). Danes Jonas Warrer and Jakob Precht Jensen finished second. Third place was held by Irishmen Robert Dickson and Sean Waddilove, who qualified for Tokyo 202One with this result.
Mainly absent, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL), who have just successfully defended the prestigious America’s Cup on behalf of New Zealand and who have just resumed their Olympic campaign towards Tokyo.
Bart Lambriex and Pim van Vugt qualified for the Olympic Games and took fifth place. Pim van Vugt explained: “We are happy with all the races in the Gold Fleet. We did it pretty well. Except for race 14, in which we finished 19th. It was particularly unfortunate in combination with a disqualification in Race 20, for having started too early. But our analysis is that we just lost a little too much at the start. But overall we are happy with the final and certainly the last day, ” said Pim van Vugt. The duo now have four months to prepare for the Olympics.
