Lando Norris has joined forces with Max Verstappen in issuing a stark warning to the FIA that more crashes are to come if the sport goes ahead with plans to ban the use of tire warmers.

Formula 1 is phasing it out, with a Pirelli test at the United States Grand Prix to assess how the 2023 rubber can withstand 50 degrees lower temperatures. Feedback from drivers has been negative so far, with complaints mostly about safety issues. “That’s the problem with it, it’s more of a dangerous thing than it feels good to drive,” Norris said in Mexico.

Norris further explains: “A current Formula 1 car, designed so specifically with all the aero and everything, is not made to go out on cold tyres. It’s not like Formula 2 or Formula 3 where you can do everything on the track. That’s not how it works. So we will have discussions about that. The young Briton joins his college Verstappen, who thinks so too.

Double champion Verstappen claimed earlier this week that there would be “a lot of accidents” if Formula 1 goes ahead with his plan. Asked if he agreed with that assessment, Norris admitted: “Yes, there will be. It was the best possible terms. [in Austin] to get the tires – super hot, hot track temp, a fast first sector to get the tires up to temperature, and they weren’t good to drive even then. [Het was] so easy to have a lock, front and back. It was completely unpredictable. So once you go to a track that’s a lot colder, or it’s a little wet or something, at some point everybody can’t control the car anymore. No driver really wants that.”
