Jumbo-Visma would have loved New Zealand road champion George Bennett to wear a special champion’s jersey this season. However, the design, which foreman Richard Plugge recalls the outfit of the New Zealand rugby team, was not accepted by the national association.
“It was a very beautiful outfit, an ode to New Zealand, with a nod to the All blacks and a clear link with Jumbo-Visma, ”writes Plugge on Twitter. But the black and white design was not accepted by the New Zealand Cycling Federation.
Bennett legt in Social distance podcast what is the reason. “They said we are afraid it will be mistaken for the national team jersey,” to Bennett’s surprise. “Why? In case the national team debut at the Giro d’Italia? The championship jersey we have now is okay, but not that striking and cool.
Cycling New Zealand maintains its position Cycling. “We have national champions in all disciplines and they all wear the same jersey with the same design. It is neither possible nor incorrect to make such fundamental changes at the request of a national champion. “
