New vertical farm built in New Zealand

A new vertical farm will be installed in Ashburton (New Zealand) at the end of August, which will be planted at the beginning of September.

Landlogic, the New Zealand supplier, introduces the Vertical Farm Systems XA (VFS) series, which will grow fast growing crops including leafy greens such as loose leaf lettuce, baby spinach, arugula, mizuna, tatsoi, endive, bok choy, Swiss chard and herbs such as cilantro, parsley and basil. The delivery time for VFS cultures is 28 days, regardless of external influences.

Alan Cottington, CEO of Landlogic: “Our food security is vulnerable if we rely on traditional farming methods or import leafy vegetables, which are essential for a healthy staple diet.

Cottington says a VFS cropping system in Australia produces around 600kg of vegetables per week and requires just three hours of human labor per week. The system also includes an automated packing machine that packs vegetables directly from the grow shelves into eco-friendly bags or boxes.

The system is automated with computer controlled feeding, watering, lighting and sensors that monitor temperature, pH, EC and humidity. Loading, harvesting, recovery and reuse of growing medium and reloading of trays are also automated.

Landlogic is the importer and distributor of vertical truss systems for New Zealand and the Pacific, as well as a sales agent for the rest of the world, excluding Canada, Scandinavia, the Philippines and the United States. United States, and Cottington says vertical farming represents a great opportunity for the Pacific Islands to address growing concerns about food security and access to food.
