Netflix will broadcast a live sports match for the first time

We are familiar with streaming services that broadcast sporting events: after all, we have ViaPlay in the Netherlands for darts, Formula 1 and other sports. But the established order of streaming services rarely ventures into live events. Netflix tried it before, most notably with the Love is Blind reunion, but it turned out to be a fiasco. Now it will try again, but with sport.

It’s a celebrity golf tournament, so it’s not a serious sports game you have to watch every second. This saves a lot of pressure as Netflix’s previous live stream was a drama. It was the season reunion of Love is Blind, where all sorts of technical issues arose, causing a delay of about an hour and a half. Viewers got an error message and in the end it still didn’t happen after 1.5 hours. Netflix just decided to record it and upload it a bit later. So far, Netflix’s first attempts at live streaming…

So now he will try again, writes The Wall Street Journal. This is a Las Vegas celebrity golf event. Netflix would eventually plan to show more hardcore sports (it even wanted to buy the rights to Formula 1 in America). It is unclear what sport he is thinking of now. He has to prove himself in live streaming first, although he has successfully hosted a comedy show: There Is Hope.

In any case, Netflix and sports turned out to be a good combination. With the Drive to Survive Formula 1 series, she ensured that the sport of racing gained considerable popularity in the United States, among other places. The current series (which resembles the concept behind Drive to Survive) around Tour de France cyclists is also a big hit on the streaming service. So it’s not so much about sports, but about the occurrence of technical problems and the Flix will have to stay away from that, because if there is something that makes people fanatic, then that’s it.
