Navalny fell seriously ill in August after being poisoned by the nerve poison novichok. He has stayed in Germany for the past few months. President Vladimir Putin’s outspoken opponent returned to Russia last weekend, where he was immediately arrested.
Navalny’s lawyers say they have yet to gain access to their client. According to an ally, he was transferred to the city of Khimki, near the capital Moscow. According to opposition member Leonid Volkov, Navalny could receive a member of his legal team in the morning.
Russian authorities arrested the 44-year-old politician on Sunday after arriving at a Moscow airport after spending months in Germany. Navalny is suspected of having violated the terms of a suspended prison sentence imposed on him. Several Western countries have demanded the release of the leading opponent of President Vladimir Putin.
The Russian Prison Service has said Navalny will remain in prison at least until he appears in court later this month.
