Alabama is running behind Naji Harris The record was set when they beat Florida 52-46 on Saturday night in the SEC Championship match in Atlanta.
Harris not only set an SEC championship game record with five touchdowns, but also set a conference record for touchdowns by running behind with 53 runs.
Closer to home, Harris quickly broke Alabama’s career record for touchdowns and quick yards.
Harris, who called setting all of those new standards “an honor,” finished the night with a total of 248 yards. He was energetic in the passing game, hitting five for 67 yards, including 23, 17 and 7 yard touchdown plays in the first half Blitz in Alabama. Very few of those scoring catches could have been his best, as Harris could go to the ground with a dazzling spin move.
“I’ve been catching the ball since I was born,” he asked. People didn’t expect it from running behind, but I could catch it. “
But Harris did not rewrite Alabama football history when he beat seventh-ranked Gators.
Divonta Smith Broke his own record for reception with 15 in a game and became the school’s all-time leading scorer in yards, surpassing Amari Cooper.
Smith went over 180 yards and added to his school record for most touchdowns (39).
Mac Jones, Who completed 418 yards and five touchdowns, set the SEC Championship game record with 43 completed.
Jones and Florida Quarterback Kyle Trask Two of the leading Heisman Trophy contenders did nothing to offend their position. Smith did not receive another of the Crimson tit titles.
After Saturday night’s performance, Harris will be in the mix.
“I don’t care about that,” he said. “The two of us who got up there now are enough.”
Aside from catching all of those passes, Smith recovered from a major setback after Florida. Trey Teen Picked a throw from Jones and snatched the ball from the intended receiver, only to cough it up in a brutal, blind spot hit by the Alabama Whiteout John Messi. Jones threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Smith in the next play.
Alabama coach Nick Saban said, “We found a way to win.”
After taking an early lead, Florida got back on its way, becoming a possession game with less than a minute left.
In the end, the Alabama offense, led by Harris and Smith, was too high to beat the Gators.
“I owe a lot for our crime,” Saban said. “They responded very consistently to Bell in the game. Over 600 yards. Smitty had 15 catches. Naji hit five touchdowns, 178 yards and caught five passes. I mean, these guys were so awesome all year, they definitely delivered tonight when we needed them.”
