Helmut Marko is delighted to see that Formula 1 is attracting more and more spectators and that the popularity of the premier category of motorsport is increasing enormously, especially in the United States. This is largely due to the Netflix documentary Drive to Survive, but the Red Bull Racing adviser has a critical note on it.

Drive to Survive has pros and cons. It does a lot for Formula 1, but documentary makers are often accused of not painting a realistic picture of how things are or have been. This is one of the reasons why Max Verstappen has not cooperated with the series several times over the past year and therefore disappeared.

In conversation with the German mmotorsport-magazin.com Marko gives his opinion on this subject. The 80-year-old Austrian has two minds. “Some may know the Netflix series, which has nothing to do with reality.” However, he also sees the benefits. “It was a breakthrough for Formula 1 in the United States and as long as the ratings and the interest are there you can debate whether it’s wise or necessary. But the interest is what prevails – and as long as people want him, why should he win they don’t understand?”

More fans means more money

Ultimately, Red Bull also enjoys more international attention. The more fans follow Formula 1, the more companies are interested in sponsorship and the more money these sponsorship deals generate. Still, Marko hints, it’s important that fans soon don’t just know about Formula 1 from stories that didn’t even really happen.
