Screen maker LG Display introduces a 48 “OLED screen that can be used both flat and with a curvature. The panel can also be vibrated to serve as a speaker.
According to LG Display, the foldable OLED screen can be used flat as a TV and in a curved position as a gaming monitor. The manufacturer has yet to give details on the mechanical construction. To make the screen foldable, the housing will also need to be made of flexible material.
During the announcement, LG Display shows a photo, in which the screen can be seen in a curved position and appears to be fitted with a monitor base. LG Display is showcasing the display at CES 2021, which begins January 11 and will only take place digitally this year.
The manufacturer calls the technology Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED. The panel doesn’t have traditional built-in speakers, but the OLED panel can be vibrated with voice coils to act as a speaker. Sony has already used this technique in OLED TVs. According to LG, the layer that vibrates the screen is now 0.6mm thick, whereas it would have been 9mm previously.
LG Display doesn’t mention the 48 “panel resolution, but it’s probably the existing 4k panel that’s also used for current 48” OLED TVs. The panel has a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and supports a variable refresh rate from 40Hz to 120Hz.
The screen shown is not a complete product from LG Electronics, but a prototype of LG Display. It is the supplier of OLED panels for LG TVs, among others. Every year the display maker shows what they’re working on at the CES electronics show. Later, they can get to LG consumer products. It is not yet clear if and when LG will launch a foldable 48-inch OLED display.
