The KNVB has chosen the Abe Lenstra stadium in Heerenveen as the stadium for a possible Women’s World Cup in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in 2027.
If the Netherlands are allowed to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027 along with Germany and Belgium, matches will be played at five different stadiums in the country. Besides the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, De Kuip in Rotterdam and the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven, Enschede (Grolsch Veste) and Heerenveen (Abe Lenstra Stadium) have also registered as venues.
Germany has four host cities with Dortmund, Duisburg, Düsseldorf and Cologne. Belgium will choose the stadiums later.
FIFA awards the 2027 World Cup in May. The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium are challenged by three players. Brazil, South Africa and the United States and Mexico (jointly) are also interested in hosting the tournament.
“After the Netherlands won the European Championship in 2017, women’s football in our country received a huge boost: more interest from the general public, more professional support and an annual increase in the number of football players”, says Gijs de Jong, secretary. general of the KNVB.
“By organizing the World Cup ten years later, we want to take a new step for women’s football. Recently, we have noticed that this wish is widely supported. Not only among our colleagues in Belgium and Germany, but in our own country, there is also a lot of enthusiasm from the government, politicians, cities, stadiums and the many football fans.
